Kira’s Story: Before I took the Money Matters course through Goodwill, I was like anyone else – living paycheque to paycheque, always worried some surprise expense might pop up, and trying to carve out a social life with the pennies left over. Taking the Money Matters course, I was excited to learn new skills and take control over my finances, but at the time, I had no idea that the course would do all that plus help me save my family cottage.
I went into the course with two main goals: 1) to start a retirement fund and 2) to start a travel fund. The course taught me a lot about budgeting and banking in an open and inviting environment. For the first time in my life I was no longer embarrassed by my financial situation but instead excited to finally have the tools to change it.
The key to my success was the financial mentorship follow up. Together we could flush out what was and wasn’t working in my budget and really put the knowledge gained in the course into action. During that time, I was informed that my family cottage would be auctioned off if I did not make a decision immediately. When I presented my problem to the financial mentor, he explained it wasn’t a problem but rather a series of choices to make. If I choose to see value in the cottage, I could change my travel fund into a cottage fund and postpone travel until the cottage was completed. I felt confident enough to make that choice and save the family cottage.
I was not only empowered to take control over my day to day finances, but also to start building a financially sound future. Rebuilding my cottage helped me save a cherished place of childhood memories and it also became an investment property that will help turn my goals into reality. I would not have been able to make those choices without the knowledge learned at this course and the support of the follow up mentoring. Goodwill is a company that cares about their employees and helps them better their lives. Thank you, Goodwill!
